What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an overnight marathon coding (i.e., hacking) event, focused on building software to address a challenge or theme. Programmers, graphic designers, user interface and experience experts, entrepreneurs, and other IT strategists team together to quickly plan and execute solutions. These events are usually intended for social or educational purposes, but often result with usable software.

What do I learn at a hackathon?

Each hackathon is different, but the challenges and themes can be organized into series. The hackathons that we have managed so far are related by purpose: How can we manipulate and take advantage of large data sets and create a better or unique view of what that data means so that the public will benefit from improved security, resources and safety?

Regardless of a hackathon’s specific, participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other and develop new skills, whether in using new tools, data sources, or just creating new approaches to hard problems. Furthermore, we have seen participants at all skill levels successfully contribute toward hackathon solutions, so we encourage everyone to join.

Past hackathons, as well as those in the near future, are summarized in detail on ExpeditionHacks. Topics from these hackathons include:

  • Disaster Response
  • Food Security
  • Big Data – Context & Reporting
  • Environmental Conservation
  • Long Range Predictive Analyses

Additional hackathons planned for the future will be grouped separately and may tackle social and societal issues in a series that we call Topics from these hackathons include how to analyze various data to

  • Combat Human Trafficking
  • Advance Precision Agriculture
